If you've noticed tallow popping up everywhere lately, from your social feeds to the shelves of small skincare shops, you're not imagining it. Beef tallow skincare has gone from something your great-grandmother might have used to one of the most talked-about ingredients in clean beauty.
At Eden's Organic, tallow is where we started. Our Beef Tallow Face Cream was the very first product we made, and it's still the one people ask about most. So we wanted to put everything we've learned in one place: what tallow is, why so many people are trying it, who it's a good fit for (and who should go slowly), and how to bring it into your routine without overthinking it.
Pour a cup of coffee. Let's talk tallow.
What is beef tallow skincare?
Tallow is rendered beef fat. When fat from cattle is gently heated and strained, it becomes a smooth, creamy, shelf-stable fat that people have used for centuries in candles, soap, cooking, and yes, skincare.
In skincare, tallow is usually whipped into balms, creams, and butters, often blended with plant oils and herbs. The result is rich and protective, the kind of product you need only a little of.
Why are so many people trying tallow?

A big part of tallow's comeback is a simple wish: fewer, more recognizable ingredients. A lot of people have spent years trying products with long ingredient lists, synthetic fragrances, and fillers, and they're ready for something that feels closer to the source.
Many people also say tallow feels comforting and familiar on their skin: rich, but not greasy once it settles in. For a lot of our customers, that feeling is what keeps them coming back.
We want to be honest with you here: research on tallow specifically is still limited. Much of its reputation comes from tradition and from the experience of people who use it every day. We think that's worth sharing plainly rather than overselling. Tallow isn't magic. It's a simple, nourishing moisturizer that a lot of people love.
Why grass-fed tallow matters
Not all tallow is the same. What the animal ate and how the fat is handled both affect the finished product.
We use tallow from grass-fed cattle because we want to start with the best raw ingredient we can find and know where it comes from. For our face cream, we take it a step further: the tallow soaks for 24 hours in Madagascar vanilla beans before it's blended, which gives it a soft, warm scent without any synthetic fragrance.
For us, grass-fed is simply part of making something we'd be glad to put on our own family's skin.
What is tallow good for on skin?
Here's what tallow does well, in plain terms:
-
Moisturizing. Tallow is rich and emollient, so it helps skin feel soft and moisturized, especially when the air turns dry.
-
Sealing in hydration. Because it's a fat, tallow forms a light protective layer that helps hold moisture in. That's why it's lovely as a last step at night.
-
Comfort for dry, rough patches. Elbows, heels, knuckles, and winter cheeks are where many people first fall in love with tallow.
-
Keeping a routine simple. One good balm can replace a few products for some people.
You'll find a lot of bigger promises about tallow online. We'd rather tell you what we're confident in: it's a nourishing, protective moisturizer that feels good to use.
Is tallow good for your face?
For many people, yes, and the face is where a lot of people start. Here's how to think about it by skin type:
-
Dry or mature skin: often the happiest with tallow, since richness is exactly what it's missing.
-
Normal or combination skin: try a thin layer at night first, or use it only on drier areas.
-
Sensitive skin: many people with sensitive skin like that tallow products can be made with a short ingredient list. Even so, always patch test first.
-
Oily or acne-prone skin: go slowly. Rich balms can feel heavy on oily skin, and everyone's skin responds differently. Start with a tiny amount a few nights a week and see how your skin feels. We'll be writing more about acne-prone skin next week.
What's in our tallow products

We keep our ingredient lists short and real. Here are the tallow products most people start with:
Beef Tallow Face Cream: The product that started it all. Grass-fed beef tallow soaked in Madagascar vanilla beans, blended with jojoba oil, castor oil, organic local honey, beeswax, and frankincense and vanilla essential oils. It's rich without feeling heavy. Available in a 5ml sample, 2oz, and 4oz, so you can try a little before committing to a jar.
Beef Tallow Body Butter: Grass-fed beef tallow, organic coconut oil, herbal-infused jojoba oil, arrowroot powder, and frankincense and vanilla essential oils, whipped so it melts on contact and absorbs without feeling greasy. A favorite before bed.
Beef Tallow Lip Balm: An easy, low-commitment way to try tallow for the first time.
Tallow Foundation Stick: Tallow-based coverage in four shades: Ivory, Light-Medium, Medium-Tan, and Mocha.
How to use tallow on your face
-
Start with clean, dry skin. Wash with a gentle cleanser and pat dry.
-
Use less than you think. Warm a pea-sized amount (or less) between your fingertips until it softens.
-
Press and massage gently into your face, avoiding your eyes, mouth, and any broken skin.
-
Go lighter in the morning, richer at night. One of our customers put it perfectly: "Love this stuff! A little goes a long way. I lightly apply it under makeup and go a little heavier at bedtime." (Nancy N.)
-
Give it a couple of weeks. Every new product takes some getting used to. Pay attention to how your skin feels and adjust how much and how often you use it.
Tallow also layers nicely. If you like a face oil, apply the oil first and press a thin layer of tallow over it to seal it in.
How we make it in Foley
Eden's Organic began with Christian's desire for simpler, more intentional personal care. Christian's mother, a nurse of more than 30 years, sparked an early interest in holistic wellness, and years of learning about herbs, oils, and natural ingredients led to the products we make today.
Everything is handcrafted in small batches here on the Alabama Gulf Coast, using herb-infused oils and no synthetic fragrances or fillers. Because we work in small batches with natural ingredients, you may notice slight differences in color or texture from one jar to the next. That's not a flaw. It's what real ingredients look like.
As Christian says, "Clean living does not have to happen all at once. Most of us are simply doing the best we can, making small changes as we learn."
And now you can see it all in person. Our storefront is open at 106 E Laurel Ave in downtown Foley. Stop by, open a jar, and ask us anything.
